Making a change to the golf swing is not an easy task. There are two main reasons:
1) Breaking habits because of trained in neurological pathways makes the feel of change very odd. In general to make the required changes usually the feeling has to be quite extreme in order to get to the swing positions required.
Of course this puts us on edge because the norm is being tampered with. However there should be a sense of achievement if good shots are produced with the swing that feels less than easy, as you are more than halfway there to achieving your goal of the swing change.
2) There is also the anxiety of the golf course. Even if all is well on the practice ground the consequence of the shot unconsciously increases with the fear of hitting a poor shot with the new feeling in the swing.
This is where a bit of mental toughness is required in order to properly implement the changes. In the early stages of change there has to be some acceptance of poor shots because of the difficulties in making changes. This will ultimately speed the journey to your better swing.
3) Obviously seeing is believing so seeing your swing on video is the best way to confirm if these changes are happening. It also may help in how exagerarated your feeling needs to be to achieve the desired positions.
With most of us having smart phones it is easy if practicing in pairs to capture the swings on video, and check our progress.
This piece is not to put off people making changes, but having a better understanding of how and why things happen should help. This is why winter is a good time to make them as it gives time to become used to the new feelings before the playing season starts.
It is forecast for a dry weekend so hopefully some good golf will be played!
