Guess who’s back?

Rewind to May 2018 when Francesco Molinari had just lifted the BMW PGA Championship; he was only two months away from his first Major victory (The Open, of course) and without doubt the golden boy of European golf.

At that very same time, Englishman Danny Willett was going through a dramatic loss of form that saw his World Ranking drop from ninth following his Green Jacket in 2016 to 462nd just after Molinari was finishing up his champagne on Wentworth’s eighteenth.

After going through a raft of changes to find a way back to golf's elite, two huge wins have followed in the last eleven months with the second of those on Sunday at the BMW PGA Championship. A final-round 67 enabled Willett to pull away from Jon Rahm (who he shared the overnight lead with) by closing out with birdie-birdie to win by three and make it seven Tour titles in the 31-year-old’s career.

Jargon explained

In the latest of our battle series, we set two terms up against each other - bounce and grind - to explain what they mean when it comes to our wedge play as it's actually a lot simpler than you may think.

What is grind?

This is all to do with helping to improve contact with the turf and involves the removal of some of the material from the sole to achieve this.

Titleist really excels in this area with the SM7 wedge coming in six grind options. So, whether you're after some help in the bunker (K grind) or when you open up the face around the greens (M or L grinds), it's important you come and speak to us about which grind will help you the most out on the course.

What is bounce?

Have you ever heard the saying 'bounce is your friend'? Well, it's definitely true and having the correct bounce will help you enormously.

It's the angle between your wedge's leading edge and the lowest point of the sole, with factors such as swing type (steep or shallow) and course conditions (firm or soft) playing a role as to how much bounce you need. If you're looking for more forgiveness from your wedges, the bounce is what you need to look at.

Winter is coming

Have you ever noticed how much harder you need to hit your putts in the winter compared to summer? As surfaces begin to slow due to longer grass and wetter greens, the need for a little extra effort on your putting stroke becomes clear.

Should you change your putter?

As putts need to be hit harder to get the ball going the same distance as they do in the summer months, using a heavier putter certainly won’t do you any harm.

The thought here is that a heavier putter will do more of the work for you, allowing for a smooth and more controlled putting stroke.
